Bridge
By Gordon Hendricks
TTI-FSS was approached in 2014 to evaluate the structural steel supports of an historic railroad bridge in Virginia. The bridge, originally built in 1882, was purchased in the early 1900s by the railroad and moved to its current Virginia location. The state took ownership of the bridge in 2014, and kicked off renovation efforts. It was hoped that the integrity of the bridge supports would be sufficient to sustain the bridge’s restoration to its original condition.
The bridge sections were shipped to TTI-FSS Port Shop facility location for a full evaluation. Unfortunately, the structural members were beyond repair. The TTI-FSS team had to redesign the understructures for the historic wrought-iron upper truss sections. TTI-FSS has worked diligently over the lengthy interim, bringing the bridge back to life in rural Virginia.
